SWAMi Reflection #2

Moving on to our 2nd visit to the SWAMi Home, 17/5/2018, after our very first experience, all of us decided to go in with an open mind, expecting to accept everything that would happen and take them into stride. Before the visit, we had prepared a few iPad games for the elderly. We researched on the applications and found those that might be good to train the elderly's reflexes and also since some of them have dementia. We found some applications that might be able to tackle these aspects. The list that we came up with TOP 5 (not in order)- Stack- Mazes & More- Fruit Ninja- Memory Games: Brain Training- MindMate: Healthy AgingSince these applications were not vetted by the teacher yet, we decided to just try them out. Also we brought a physical set of Chinese chess as seen in the picture just in case Mr Lim did not want to look too much into the screens of devices. When we arrived at the home, for the Dementia section, the elderly were getting ready to start coloring. However Mr Lim did not seem to really enjoy it, he shared with us that he was more of the active sort of person, wanting to constantly move about. Hence we decided to propose the mobile applications that we had to him, he tried the Fruit Ninjas, which is basically just swiping fruits and cutting them into 2 before they disappear. He seemed to be enjoying the game for awhile, even saying that it was easy, but as it went on, we felt that the game might not be very suitable for him because it was a little to fast paced. Also, after 10minutes or so, Mr Lim started to get bored with the game, which we also totally understand because it might be a little too straining on his eyes. After, we just pulled out the Chinese chess that we had and proposed whether he would like to challenge me. He readily agreed and we commenced the game. Throughout the game, we decided to talk more and we found out that he actually really liked singing but in the first music session, no one allowed him to sing. I felt a little bad for him because he should be given the chance to do the things that he likes. He was very participate in the board game but our time was cut short because he had to leave. I felt that the 2nd session was really so much better, Mr Lim opened up himself to us even more and that is an aspect that I was so grateful for. Plus the fact that Mr Lim had wanted to play the mobile game that we suggested shows that he actually supports the initiative, however I think 1 point to note is that they wouldn't be so comfortable using electronics devices for too long. So we need to implement more physical games that also can help them, like monopoly (counting money), uno (fast reflexes) and/or Chinese Chess (strategic thinking/planning). I think what we can do the next session is to interact with the elderly and his family more, since it is family day. Understand from their side of view and how they treat their elderly. Because from what I have heard is that the elderly home is not cheap, they cost a few thousands each month, so I just really want to understand from their point of view, why they are willing to pay so much money to send them to the home, instead of hiring maids/nurses to take of them at home.
